The first number is the basic type of box:

Type 1 - small, 2-spring box
Type 3 - Special purpose 4-spring box w/o shock mounting
Type 4 - the older standard Fender 4-spring box
Type 6 - very small, 2-spring box w/ shock mounting
Type 8 - small, 3-spring box
Type 9 - new standard Fender 6-spring box
